Why do younger learners need to wear a swimming cap?

At Swim Rite Aquatic School (SRAS), we strongly encourage our younger learners to wear their swim cap. There are a couple of reasons for doing so. First and foremost, is to keep their hair off their face. Long hair that is not tied or tuck away proper interferences with breath exchange. The child would not be able to inhale properly when their faces are partially covered by the wet hair during side breathing in front crawl or forward breathing in breaststroke. This results in poor swim form and stamina. SRAS caps that are made from silicon are waterproof hence protect the children’s hair from pool chemicals. If your child could not get used to the tightness of a silicon cap, consider a mesh or Lyra cap. While they might not keep water out, these caps still help to keep children’s hair in place. Younger learners tend to fidget with their goggles, removing and putting them on again. Caps prevent swimming goggles from pulling the child’s hair. Ouch! Lastly, though it is surprising to know, pool water in Singapore can get chilly. A silicon cap helps to retain heat hence enhancing the learning experience in colder conditions. Make it a habit, have your children don on a swimming cap today!
