Factors of Stroke Progression

The steps to learning a swim stroke can be broken down into five main areas,

(1) Body Position
(2) Legs
(3) Arms
(4) Breathing
(5) Timing

Good body position is the foremost factor in learning any stroke. It is important that the student maintains good body position when learning each area of the stroke. For example, when doing flutter kick, with arm extended, adopt a natural spine position with eyes looking directly at the bottom of the pool.

Also, good body position is important at the beginning, during and after every stroke cycle. A common issue is a face forward position before and after the breaststroke pull. Looking forward tilts the body balance resulting in a lower leg position. This creates frontal resistance that impedes movement.

Have you adopted a good body position?
