When purchasing a kickboard (board) for your child, you will need to take your child’s age, learning level and cost into consideration.
Boards differ in size, shape and material. For a child who is learning to swim, a rectangular board provides stability which enhance learning experience. The board should be of the right size. When his arms are outstretched holding the top of the board, the end of it should be between his elbows and underarms.
Boards differ in density, stiffness and weight. Lower quality boards tend to be lighter and deteriorate over time, they turn soft after absorbing pool water and will flex when a child rest their forearm while holding the top-of-the board. Some might even tear, break or the surface becomes “powdery” over time.
Checklist:
- Rectangular.
- Right size. End of the board should between his elbow and underarm when he is hold the top of the board.
- Solid feeling. Try bending the board, it should be stiff.
